The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Treatment Unit sits inside the hospital’s Department of Gastroenterology and works as a multidisciplinary team built in 2012 around gastroenterology and colorectal surgery, joined by anorectal surgery, imaging, pathology, nutrition and nursing — one of the earliest teams assembled in China specifically for IBD. The IBD subspecialty holds 96 dedicated beds, discharges around 6,000 IBD patients a year and sees more than 10,000 specialist outpatient visits; the multidisciplinary team meets weekly and works through more than 200 difficult cases a year. The department is a provincial referral platform for difficult digestive disease and takes part in dozens of international multicentre trials of IBD drugs.

The IBD Centre runs across the hospital’s Department of Gastroenterology, whose head directs it, and its gastrointestinal surgery service. It treats Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and intestinal disease of unknown cause, states that it holds every biologic currently available in China alongside new-drug trials, and takes referrals from across the country for intestinal disease that is difficult to diagnose. Surgically it does more than 300 bowel operations a year, most of them minimally invasive, including laparoscopic surgery for the fistulas and strictures of Crohn’s disease and total proctocolectomy with pouch reconstruction for ulcerative colitis. Gastroenterology runs across four campuses — Qingchun, Qiantang, Grand Canal and Shaoxing.

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Multidisciplinary Consultation Centre is led by the Department of Gastroenterology and brings gastrointestinal surgery, imaging, pathology, pharmacy, nursing and nutrition to the same table to plan care for difficult IBD cases. The hospital states it formed an IBD group and a dedicated IBD clinic in 2008, and that the multidisciplinary meeting had been running every two weeks for years before the centre was formally constituted in 2021.
