The IBD Centre runs across the hospital’s Department of Gastroenterology, whose head directs it, and its gastrointestinal surgery service. It treats Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and intestinal disease of unknown cause, states that it holds every biologic currently available in China alongside new-drug trials, and takes referrals from across the country for intestinal disease that is difficult to diagnose. Surgically it does more than 300 bowel operations a year, most of them minimally invasive, including laparoscopic surgery for the fistulas and strictures of Crohn’s disease and total proctocolectomy with pouch reconstruction for ulcerative colitis. Gastroenterology runs across four campuses — Qingchun, Qiantang, Grand Canal and Shaoxing.
