Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center

Physicians and surgeons work as a single team covering adults and children (mainly upper-primary age and above), including refractory and severe disease. Alongside ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease the centre names intestinal Behçet’s disease, non-specific multiple small-intestinal ulcers and Cronkhite–Canada syndrome as conditions it treats, and accepts undiagnosed enteritis and intestinal ulcers. Beyond diagnosis and treatment it states it supports nutrition, drug therapy, pregnancy and birth, and school and working life. Internal medicine is referral-only, so a referral letter and an appointment are needed.

What this unit is strong at

  • 80–100 IBD operations a year, including ileoanal pouch anastomosis
  • Seton technique for complex anal fistula, chosen to preserve anal function
  • Around 600 intestinal ultrasound examinations a year, used to reduce how often children and pregnant patients need endoscopy
  • Around 500 lower endoscopies, 200 small-bowel endoscopies and 100 endoscopic stricture dilations a year
  • Around 140 patients a month receiving biologic therapy
  • Around 400 pregnancies in IBD patients cared for since 2000
  • Intestinal Behçet’s disease, non-specific multiple small-intestinal ulcers and Cronkhite–Canada syndrome named as treated conditions
  • Adults and children treated by one combined medical and surgical team
